Plato's most famous teaching on wisdom is the 'Allegory of the Cave. ' He describes prisoners chained in a cave, seeing only shadows on the wall, which they mistake for reality. The philosopher is the one who breaks free, climbs out of the cave, and sees the sun (the Truth). Wisdom, for Plato, is the painful but necessary journey from the world of appearances to the world of forms. It is the ability to see beyond the surface to the eternal truths.
