The Buddha distinguished between worldly pleasure (which is fleeting and bound to pain) and true happiness (Sukha). He taught that 'there is no happiness greater than peace. ' Ordinary happiness depends on getting what we want; Buddhist happiness depends on not needing anything. It is the joy of a mind free from remorse, free from ill will, and free from anxiety. The Buddha encouraged the cultivation of the 'Brahmaviharas'—loving-kindness, compassion, sympathetic joy, and equanimity—as the abodes of true happiness. This happiness is not something you pursue; it is what remains when you stop creating suffering.
